Mastering Outdoor LST: How to Flatten Your Canopy Without Topping
The setup
An outdoor grower working with a vigorous Purple Pomegranate hybrid in a massive 30-40 gallon pot of soil and coco mix wanted to widen their canopy. The plant had a slight lean and a dominant main stem, which naturally concentrates growth hormones at the very top, leaving lower branches in the shade.
With a clear 75F day and 45% humidity, the conditions were perfect for training. The grower's goal was to break apical dominance, the plant's natural habit of growing like a Christmas tree, and force a flat, bushy footprint to maximize their 13.8 hours of daily sunlight.
Instead of cutting the main tip, the grower chose low stress training (LST). They carefully bent the main stem, secured it, and opened up the inner nodes to direct sunlight, resulting in an immediate and stress-free response.
Why it worked
This is a textbook win because of three key moves: structural support, hormone redistribution, and leaf tucking. When you bend a main stem, you disrupt the flow of auxins (growth hormones) that usually rush to the highest point. By pinning the main tip down to the container rim, every single lateral branch suddenly finds itself at the same height. The plant responds by distributing those auxins evenly, turning every side shoot into a dominant lead cola.
Crucially, the grower used bamboo stakes to support the central bend. When bending thick, woody stems on large outdoor plants, the tension can easily split the main stalk down the middle. The bamboo stakes acted as a splint, absorbing the physical stress and protecting the vascular system.
Finally, instead of aggressively defoliating, the grower tucked the large outer fan leaves. This kept the plant's solar panels intact while letting light penetrate directly to the newly exposed shoots. Feeding at a balanced pH of 6.34 in this rich medium ensured the roots had optimal nutrient uptake to fuel this sudden burst of lateral growth.
How to replicate it
- Wait until the plant is in active vegetative growth with a strong, pliable main stem and at least 5-6 established nodes.
- Water the plant lightly a few hours before training: hydrated stems are more flexible and less likely to snap than dry, brittle ones.
- Insert a strong bamboo stake close to the base of the main stem to anchor the root ball and support the direction of your bend.
- Slowly bend the main stem toward the rim of your container, securing it with soft plant ties or rubber-coated wire anchored to the pot edge.
- Gently pull lateral branches outward in a circular pattern, securing them at a uniform height to create an even canopy footprint.
- Tuck large fan leaves under the new growing tips rather than cutting them off, preserving the plant's energy factories.
Keep it going
- Step away and let the large container dry down for 3-4 days: wet coco and soil mixes need time to breathe, especially after the physical movement of training.
- Monitor the tie-downs every 2-3 days to ensure they are not cutting into the expanding stems as the plant grows thicker.
- Adjust the tension on your ties weekly to maintain a flat canopy level as outer shoots begin to stretch upward.
- Prepare for the pre-flower stretch by ensuring your nutrient levels are balanced with an EC of 1.2-1.8 to support the massive increase in branch sites.
